2018-01-27 Menai Straits

With the weather forecast for SW F5 gusting to F7 there was much debate among the various groups at Anglesey Outdoors as to where would be best for a paddle. Having had a little drive down the coast to Trearddur Bay and seen the various conditions, it was an easy decision, head for the Menai Straits. Back at the centre I bumped into Roger Chandler, Barry Shaw and James Stevenson. They were saying that they would probably go to Trearddur Bay and do rescues and skills, but James was suggesting a sneeky trip on the north coast.

With the tide not turning until just after 12:15, Keith and I set off from the Sea Zoo with the wind and tide building behind us. As we cleared the sand bank and made our way into the main channel we started to pick up some swell. Good surfs were had all the way to Felinheli. I had hoped we would get to go inside the “man made” cave at Plas Newydd, but the tide was still too low.

We were certainly moving along at a good rate and it was in no time we reached Pont Britannia. We played around in the many eddies and currents around Gored Goch for a while before making our way to the slipway at Menai Bridge.

Later in the Paddlers bar, I found out that unlike the South West Coast of Anglesey, the North coast was flat, albeit windy.

Back in the van I had a good look at the weather forecasts and tides and decided Point Lynas to Porth Wen would make a good trip for tomorrow. Into the wind on the way out, but hopefully we could find shelter under the cliffs. LW was at 12:36 at Amlwch. It was then just a case of posting the timings out to the Facebook group, Make some sarnies and off to bed!

A great days paddle!
